Week 6: Lucas - Irvine Spectrum

So for this project I went to the Irvine Spectrum Center. This outdoor shopping center had a wonderfully festive feel to it, especially at the main entrance, which you can see to the left. The colorful lights of the Ferris Wheel and the Christmas tree really gave a big splash of color and personality to the space. They contrasted well with the white twinkle lights that were wrapped around all of the palm trees throughout the space. It created a great center piece to the whole plaza, which to me really seemed like the main goal of the design. To have a central plaza that spiraled out into smaller sections that had their own anchor points (i.e. the carousal). Where as when you moved away from the anchor points the walk ways were warmly and dimly lit, letting the shops become the focus. The atmosphere was definitely warm and inviting, creating a great sense of camaraderie (especially with the recently added ice rink for the holidays). As we moved away from the center of the plaza and the main entrance, I noticed many of the store fronts were brighter and more invitingly lit than the walk ways that housed them, drawing your attention to what was inside. Overall I feel like the goal was accomplished.

One of the stores I chose to highlight was the The Game Chest. I thought that this store didn't really fit the aesthetic of the shopping center. As we walked around the rest of the shopping center, I noticed many of the shops were quite inviting and looked to pull you in with the interior lighting. This shop really fell short in that regard. I felt that the lighting inside was really flat fluorescent lighting that actually created a really uninviting and unflattering atmosphere compared to the many shops around it. For such a cool store it really felt like a missed opportunity.
The second shop that I chose was the Apple Store. I thought that this shop actually lended itself to the plaza, even though it definitely seemed to live in a different color palate than the rest of the stores. Between the sheer glass walls and the brightness of the store it almost acted as a beacon in the corner of the plaza. Considering it was also surrounded by trees in twinkle lights and the fountain with colored lights it did seem to create another atmosphere in and of itself, similar to how the carousal and ferris wheel created their own anchor points in the shopping center.
