Week #3 - Lu - Thoughtful Macareno

Adding one more cat to the blog :) This is Macareno, my kitten who I also got to visit over the weekend. He, and his two siblings were once foster kittens who I ended up adopting. I love all of my cats but Macareno became very attached to me ever since he was a baby, and even more so over this past summer, which made moving out very difficult for both of us. I visit him every time I get the chance. I took this picture on Saturday at around 2:00pm when the sun was coming through the blinds creating a pretty backlight effect on the kitten, who was just enjoying the warm sunlight. There is something about this picture that makes me want to keep looking at it. I think it may be the color palette, the soft light, and the kitten’s expression that make everything have a very peaceful essence. Something that I was thinking of when I took this picture, and that we’ve been talking about in class, is the way in which we perceive sunlight and how it actually is. I like seeing how white and bright sunlight is in this picture as opposed to the very saturated color that comes to mind whenever I think about a sunny Saturday afternoon. I also like how balanced the shadows and highlights are. The light is very soft, but we can see much depth on his face, especially on his eyes, which look much greener here than they actually are in real life. I also like that we can get a very clear sense of source in this picture, we know where the light is coming from and we can see that at first glance. Definitely what I enjoy the most is his face, he looks like he’s having really deep thoughts, but I think he was just annoyed that I kept taking pictures when he just wanted to enjoy the sun.

  1. Really wonderful analysis of the image and the way light can inform an emotion or a state of mind. With all the saturate color I have seen in your work, which has been beautiful, there is a crisp simplicity about this that is really nice
