Week #1 - Lu - A Good Memory

This is a picture of a picture, and it must be one of the oldest I own in any of my devices. I’ve had it and passed it around for about 10 years. These are my grandparents in their front yard in -probably- somewhere around the year 2001. That was only a few years before I met them. Looking at this picture, there are things that I have very present in my memory; the white gate, the tall grass, the small trees with lavender flowers behind them, it’s all just the way I remember first seeing. The only difference I see is the color of their hair, that I got to experience seeing turn gray as the years passed by.

There is something about the colors in this picture that I enjoy a lot. Their home is -or was- located in a particularly rainy place in Mexico. Every important memory I have from said place is gray, cloudy, and rainy. I like it a lot, however, I always remember their home in the color yellow, and being sunny and warm. The walls just had so much light and life to them. In this picture, it looks like it was sunny. The shadows and the contrast that the light creates make me think it was that way, and even if it wasn’t, this picture reflects exactly what my memory recalls from their home and themselves; warmth, sun, comfort, happiness. About their relationship, I really like the way this picture shows me how they immensely loved each other, because that is how I remember them. It wasn’t only love that they had for each other, but there was always this sense of deep admiration and respect that truly built their marriage and showed me a healthy way of loving someone.

Something I just remembered and that could help understand the big shadows on their faces and on the grass, is pointing out that there was a very, very tall tree in the yard that should be located in an angle in front of them, which makes me think that the sunlight was coming through it?  I’m not sure but I think the shadows are placed in an interesting way that makes the sunlight on their faces light exactly what’s important. I’m very happy that I have this picture and so many memories attached to it.

Regardless of how the story ended, this is the way I will always remember them; warm, sunny, and immensely caring and loving.

  1. Wonderful image and analysis of the lighting and how it affects you. It does have a theatrical or focused quality about it :)
